But this post is about recycling. It is important for the environment and helps us keep costs down for you. If your coming to the farm or going to the Brainerd, Baxter, Nisswa or Crosslake farm markets and you have extra gallon pots, plant trays, or flower vases, bring them to us and we will make good use of them. And you will help the environment in the process. And thanks.

Great Produce Week of September 6th

We are open on Labor day & M-Sat from 10 to 6 PM.

Great Fresh Produce. Tomatoes galore–slicers, canners, romas, cherry, tomatilla, and yellow plumb. Cucumbers, cabbage, beets, carrots, potatoes, onions, green beans, cabbage, cantalope, sweet corn and more.

Wonderful Fresh Herbs. Cut while you wait–2 minutes. Thyme, oregano, basil, dill, mint, sage, horseradish and more.

Beautiful Cut Flowers. Zinnias in all colors from green to pink, purple, yellow, and red. Nice cosmos. Sunflowers in every conceiveable color. Great arrangements $5.00 or make your own. If you want to cut your wn, you can do that as well.

Perennial Plants. A wide selection of perennial flowers and herbs in gallon pots–only $5.00 each. Now is a great time to plant perennials for next year.

If your young, or young at heart, join us at the Borden Farm. The sky is clear, there is no wind–a trace of fall in the air. You can take the Duck Pond Path see the ducks & geese, take the Bamboo Trail (the bamboo is starting too bloom in magnificence) to the chicken house with the hens and rooster, or take the Beaver Trail and turn right on Cream Can Alley to feed carrots to the rabbits. If you have more energy, walk the mulched paths through the herb, vegetables, and flower gardens. We expect butterflies galore today, Bring your camera. Open M-Sat 10 to 6PM. Open Labor Day. Tour free. Buy great produce if you like. Today we will be picking ground cherries and the first of the gourds & pumpkins. Planning ahead for next year? We have great perennial flowers and herbs for your garden. We sell as perennials only those plants that will survive on our farm without special winter protection. Gallon pots only $5.00.

Want a great garden next year? We are renting garden plots, tilled and ready to plant that are 20′ by 50′, located in full sun, behind a 10′ fence to keep the deer at bay. You plant, weed, and harvest. You get summer exercise in the sun, can grow your own pesticide free produce, eat well and save money. Garden plot reservations now being taken. $50 for the 2011 growing season. If it doesn’t rain an inch a week, we water it for you. Farm is open to those who rent garden 7 days a week from sunrise to sunset.

Great Produce at The Farm week of August 30th

Winter Squash…Acorn, Buttercup, Blue Hubbard, and Spaghetti. and some apples for sauce, pies, and stuffing in squash.

Vine Ripened Tomatoes Galore. Heirloom slicers, red cherry, romas, yellow plum, & tomatillos. The vine ripened “ugly” ones make great canners, salsa, & spaghetti sauce and are cheap.

Sweet Corn. Nothing better than fresh sweet corn. When you get it at the store, it is days old. Grab some of ours for your dinner table or for freezing.

Canning Orders Being Taken for tomatoes, sweet corn, & peppers for canning & freezing. Please order ahead of time if you can. Call 218-232-0848.

Fresh herbs in abundance. Lots of basil, mint, thyme, oregano & sage. Big bunches of herbs and cheap. Dry or freeze your own herbs for the winter.

We got peppers. Lots of sweet bell, some sweet banana, jalepeno and other selections. Peppers need hot weather and we have had it.

Other Produce? Includes beets, carrots, kohlrabi, potatoes, and more.

Yes. It is a sign of fall. We now have our first winter squash available for you–acorn and buttercup now. Many more varieties soon. For a complete list of whats availabe at the farm, scroll down. And please remember we recycle when you visit the farm. Items needed? Flower vases. Gallon pots. Sturdy plant trays, etc. Bring your excess with you. Plan & Plant Now for 2011.

For a great perennial garden in 2011, plan and plant now. Here are some quick tips.
1. Prepare your soil well. Doing so saves great time and agony later. Remove all perennial grasses. Add compost (we have great peat for sale). 2. Plan the garden with a full knoweldge of the height of your plant. Nothing worse than having a beautiful plant hidden behind taller ones. Many plant varieties come in varies heights–sedums, gallardias, phlox & many others. 3. Plant according to sun/shade requirements. A few plants will do well in sun or shade, but most have a strong preference. 4. Know the water needs of your plants. Some like it dry. Some like it wet. 5. Know the bloom time of your plants. Some bloom all season, most have a fairly specific bloom time. It is great to have something blooming from early spring to later fall. 6. Make sure the perennial is winter hardy in your zone. Most plants are perennials somewhere, but big chains with national marketing sell plants that will never survive in northern Minnesota.

Now is a great time to establish your perennial flower or herb garden for next year. Do it now and do it right and you will have hummers and butterflies in abundance.

At the farm we have tremendous fall specials on perennials–the ones that live at the farm in northern Minnesota without protection–for you. And at great prices. You get well rooted perennials in gallon pots or larger for $5.00 each. We have moe than 40 varieties for you to choose from. Among them annabelle hydrangea, baby’s breath, liatris, galliardias, coneflowers, sedums, hostas and so much more. Visit the farm. check them out. Take home some great fresh vegetables, flowers or herbs if you like. And if your young or think young take the flowered path to the pond to visit the ducks and the geese. “Peeps,” our 16 week old gosling, leads several tours a day to the pond & chicken house. She has been on WCCO TV, Facebook, and U Tube and loves people–but at 16 weeks she is developing the attitude of a teenager. Such fun.
